Overview

Jedidiah Morse (1761-1826), considered the “father of American geography,” wrote celebrated geography books that were used as textbooks and updated yearly. This title was the subject of the first recorded federal copyright lawsuit (Morse v. Reid) in 1796, where Morse was represented by Alexander Hamilton. This copy features 10 owner's inscriptions and an owner's bookplate by Daniel Cony (1752–1842). Cony was an officer in the militia during the American Revolution and helped secure victories at the Battles of Saratoga, which helped bring in the French. Afterwards, he was a judge for common pleas and participated as an elector for George Washington's second term. Additionally, he founded Cony Female Academy, which is currently Cony High School in Augusta, ME. Second edition: 322 pages, 6 maps. This copy has been rebacked (spine replaced); everything else is original. The top right corner of the front board has burn marks; the top bottom corner is frayed; foxing and browning inside.
